Set aside what the name suggests - this is a dark aromatic woody built on ambergris, vetiver and vanilla, made for cold evenings after dark.

It opens bright but briefly. Bergamot leads, with juniper beside it, dry and resinous with a pine-sharp bitterness. Grey amber - ambergris - is present almost at once, warm and mineral, and it pulls the opening inwards rather than outwards. Within minutes the citrus has done its work and stepped aside for something considerably darker.

The heart turns properly aromatic. Geranium brings a green, rose-adjacent crispness with a peppery snap to it, and patchouli answers with damp earth and dark leaf. This is the fougere spine of the fragrance: grown-up, a little austere, closer to a wood-panelled room than to open air, and it is the part that tells you this was never meant to be a fresh scent.

The base is the reason to own it. Vetiver runs smoky, rooty and dry; vanilla warms in behind it without ever turning into dessert; white musk softens the join and holds everything near the skin. Ambergris threads through the entire dry-down with a salted, skin-warm depth. The result is rich and persistent, and it reads best when cold air carries it.
