Fakhar Al Oud The White Oud opens on a dusting of cinnamon, and what is striking is how gently it lands. Cool aromatic lavender sits alongside the spice and takes the heat straight out of it, so the first few minutes read as warm and herbal rather than fiery.

The middle turns creamier as dry cedarwood arrives with caramel folded around it. The two hold each other in check: the wood stops the caramel spilling into pudding territory, and the caramel keeps the wood from going too austere. It is the most comfortable stretch of the wear.

The dry-down is the warmest part. Tonka bean, vanilla and amber settle in together, resinous and softly sweet, while a quiet thread of oud runs beneath them and lends a little smoke and grain. Nothing shouts; it simply gets deeper as the evening goes on.

Cold weather suits it. Wear it through autumn and winter, in the evening or across a long day when you want something with real weight to it. Equally at home on men and on women.

How to wear

Spray 2-3 times onto pulse points - wrists, the base of the throat, behind the ears - from roughly 15cm away. Moisturised skin holds the amber and tonka far better than dry skin, so apply after a shower and leave it to settle without rubbing. One extra pass on a scarf or a coat collar keeps the oud and cedarwood with you through the evening.
