This is the dark one in the collection: black pepper and incense smoke over a rose that has been left out in the cold.

It starts with heat and haze. Black pepper is coarse and dry, incense curls up behind it with that cool church-resin smoke, and a thin line of bergamot is the only brightness allowed in. Nothing about the opening is friendly, and that is the point.

The heart is rose and leather, which is the whole argument of the fragrance. Rose comes through deep and slightly dusty rather than fresh-cut, geranium gives it a green, peppery backbone, and the leather accord spreads underneath, dry and a little tannic, like a jacket that has been worn for years. The incense from the top never leaves; it just moves behind the flowers.

Patchouli, amber and oak wood take over for the long finish. The wood is dry and grainy, patchouli earths it, and amber adds a dark resinous warmth that makes the smoke feel lived-in rather than harsh. It is cold-weather wear, best after dark, and it stays on a coat long after you have taken it off.
