Private Reserve opens on Timur pepper, a bright Nepalese berry-pepper with a grapefruit edge, and spends the rest of the wear turning that sparkle into rose and dry amber.

The first few minutes crackle. Timur pepper leads, more citrus than heat, and pink pepper sharpens it from underneath while bergamot and grapefruit pour cold juice over the top. It reads clean and a little electric, the sort of opening that wakes up a shirt collar rather than filling a room.

As the citrus settles, rose steps forward with blackcurrant beside it, so the floral heart arrives tart and jammy rather than soft. Geranium keeps the rose green-stemmed and faintly metallic, jasmine rounds the edges, and the pepper from the opening never fully lets go, threading through the middle like a dark seam.

The dry-down is where the name earns itself. An ambergris accord gives a salted, skin-close warmth, vetiver brings a dry rooty shadow, and amber finishes without any sugar to it, closer to warm resin than sweetness. Musk holds the whole thing in place. It sits close, projects well, and keeps a polished edge from first spray to last.

How to wear

Two or three sprays to the pulse points at the neck and inner wrists, held a hand's width away so the citrus opens properly. Do not rub it in, as that flattens the pepper.
