Sultan Bawadi opens on freshly roasted coffee with green cardamom cracked over the top of it. This is not a sweet coffee - it is bitter, aromatic and slightly oily, closer to the pot than to the pudding, and the cardamom gives it that unmistakable green, camphorous lift you get from Arabic coffee served properly.

Rose comes through the middle and does the softening. It is a full, slightly jammy rose rather than a delicate one, and it takes the hard edge off the roast without making it sweet. Dry cedarwood frames it, and a thread of saffron runs alongside - leathery, a bit medicinal, exactly the note that stops a rose from being pretty.

The dry-down goes down into the earth. Haitian vetiver is the only thing left standing, rooty and smoky and faintly grassy, and it carries the roasted warmth of the coffee with it. The finish is dry, mineral and grown-up.

This is autumn and winter territory, at its most comfortable in the evening but confident enough for the daytime. Worn by men and women alike.

How to wear

Spray 2-3 times on pulse points (wrists, neck, behind the ears) from about 15cm away. Apply to moisturised skin and don't rub, so the coffee and cardamom stay sharp. One spray at the back of the neck lets the rose and vetiver rise as you move.
