Zahrah Velvet Affair opens almost like a patisserie counter. Almond comes first, thick and marzipan-sweet, with roasted coffee close behind it, and a quick flash of lemon and bergamot cuts across the top so the sugar never gets ahead of itself.

Then the flowers arrive, and they are not shy about it. Tuberose and jasmine sambac push up through the almond, creamy and full, orange blossom adds lift, and Bulgarian rose gives the bouquet a little depth. Powdery orris runs underneath and stops the whole thing tipping into syrup.

The base is the plush part. Praline, cacao and tonka bean melt together into something rich and buttery, while sandalwood, amber and cashmere wood build a soft frame around it. A dusting of cinnamon, a thread of patchouli and dry cedar keep the finish from going flat.

This one is built for cold weather - autumn and winter evenings, parties, long dinners - but it is warm rather than loud, and it behaves quite happily in the daytime.

How to wear

Spray 2-3 times on pulse points (wrists, neck, behind the ears) from about 15cm away. Apply to moisturised skin and don't rub, so the almond and coffee open properly. A light mist on a collar keeps the praline and vanilla in the air around you.
